Upper Mustang Trek to the walled city of Lo Manthang in Nepal's last forbidden kingdom. Licensed local guides, restricted-area permits handled, and small-group departures with Gracias Nepal, a government-registered agency in Kathmandu.

Upper Mustang Trek — Nepal's Last Forbidden Kingdom

Upper Mustang Trek is a place most trekkers never reach - a high desert kingdom tucked against the Tibetan border, closed to outside visitors until 1992. Walking here feels less like a hike and less like a shortcut through someone else's history: whitewashed villages, wind-carved cliffs riddled with sky caves, and Lo Manthang, the 14th-century walled capital where the old Kingdom of Lo still keeps its own rhythm. Because the region is a restricted area, every visitor needs a special permit and a licensed guide - which is where we come in. Gracias Nepal Tour Agency is a government-registered agency based in Kathmandu, and we've run this route long enough to know which teahouses have the best dal bhat and which day to build in a rest.

The people of Upper Mustang, known as Loba, have preserved a way of life shaped by Tibetan Buddhism and centuries of isolation - farming barley and buckwheat, herding livestock, and maintaining prayer walls, chortens, and monasteries that line nearly every stretch of trail. Lo Manthang itself, built in 1380 and still partly enclosed by its original 26-foot wall, remains the region's cultural heart, with the old Royal Palace (Monkhar) at its center. Upper Mustang is one of Nepal's most remarkable cultural landscapes, where centuries-old traditions continue to thrive against the dramatic backdrop of the Himalayas. Once an independent Himalayan kingdom, the region remained largely isolated from the outside world for generations, helping preserve its distinctive Tibetan Buddhist heritage, architecture, and way of life.

At the heart of Upper Mustang lies the historic walled city of Lo Manthang, founded in 1380 by King Ame Pal. Surrounded by imposing defensive walls rising approximately 6 meters (20 feet) high, the city has served as the cultural and political center of the former Kingdom of Lo for more than six centuries. Within its walls are centuries-old monasteries, royal palaces, narrow alleyways, and traditional mud-brick homes that offer a rare glimpse into a living medieval Himalayan settlement.

The region is also renowned for its ancient Buddhist monasteries, sacred cave complexes, colorful festivals, and enduring spiritual traditions. Many of these cultural treasures have been carefully preserved thanks to Upper Mustang's remote location and its historical status as a restricted area.

Today, a journey through Upper Mustang is far more than a trek—it is an opportunity to explore one of the Himalayas' best-preserved cultural regions, where history, religion, and breathtaking landscapes come together to create an unforgettable travel experience.

  • Cash : ATMs are scarce once you're past Jomsom. Carry enough cash for Wi-Fi, hot showers, and snacks along the way.
  • Weather : Afternoon winds pick up fast in this valley — mornings are calmer for walking and photos.
